Hellena Cardús, Presidenta de l’AICS-American Institute for Catalan Studies i Vicepresidenta i representant de la FIEC-Federació Internacional d’Entitats Catalanes a USA i ponent a la propera Trobada de la Societat Civil Catalana a L’Amèrica del Nord, els dies 5 i 6 d’octubre del 2019, a la Delegació del Govern de Catalunya a Washington DC, amb l’objectiu de treballar i enfortir els lligams de col·laboració i comunicació, us convida a participar i col·laborar amb les vostres aportacions, tal com es va fer en el passat a la última reunió dels Casals Catalans de Nord-Amèrica al 2008 a Nova York, després de ser inaugurada la seva Delegació.

Special thanks to the city of Blanes, Catalonia & Òmnium Selva Maíitima for facilitating our event in this lovely, first city of the Costa Brava.
We will have many of our AICS publications on display, and also our CATALONIA magazines, including our most recent edition.
We hope this will give people in Catalonia some insight into what our Casals and Citizens do around the world to promote Catalonia’s vibrant culture.

INTERNACIONALITZACIÓ DE LA CULTURA POPULAR I TRADICIONAL
A MANRESA FIRA MEDITERRÀNIA 2018
Aquest 6 d’octubre a Manresa, al Museu de la Tècnica, el Departament de Cultura de la Generalitat va organitzar una jornada en tres taules: Festivals internacionals, experiències d’entitats catalanes i Casals Catalans a l’exterior amb l’objectiu de propiciar intercanvis culturals de qualitat fora de Catalunya. L’obertura de la jornada va ser a càrrec del Conseller Lluís Puig Gordi en connexió directa.
On October 6th, 2018 Manresa, Catalonia's Art Museum, held the Catalan Government's Department of Culture three tiered Conference. It consisted of: International Festival Organizers, Experiences of Catalan Cultural Entities and Worldwide Catalan Casal Experiences. The intention was to promote significant cultural exchanges beyond Catalonia. The keynote speaker, Managing Director Lluís Puig Gordi.
En el primer bloc es va oferir la visió dels programadors de fires i festivals internacionals amb les intervencions de Bartolomiej Drozd, Jagiellonian Fair (Polònia); Angela Hont, Hungarian Heritatge House (Hongria); David Ibañez, Fira Mediterrània (Catalunya) i Lisa Whytock, Showcase Scotland (Escòcia). Spoke of the internationalization vision of the International Fair and Festival developers, with participants including, Bartolomiej Drozd, Jagiellonian Fair (Poland); Angela Hont, Hungarian Heritatge House (Hungary); David Ibañez, Fira Mediterrània (Catalonia) and Lisa Whytock, Showcase Scotland (Scotland).
En el segon bloc es van compartir les experiències d’internacionalització amb la participació d’Ivan Besora Roig, ADIFOLK-Associació per a la Difusió del Folklore; Laia Martín Giol, Fal·lera Gironina; Jordi Fosas, Cercle de Cultura Tradicional i Popular Marboleny i Oriol Padró, Societat Coral Amics de la Unió. In the second round of conferences, international experiences were shared by of Ivan Besora Roig, ADIFOLK-Association for the dissemination of Folklore; Laia Martín Giol, Fal·lera Gironina; Jordi Fosas, Circle of Traditional and Popular Culture Marboleny and Oriol Padró, Choral Society, Friends of the Union.

In the third block of conferences, FIEC, the Worldwide Catalan Cultural Casal Federation, with Jordi Gairin, President of the Catalan Casal in Luxembourg, discussed FIEC role in disseminating Catalan Culture worldwide; Hellena Cardús, President AICS and Mayte Duarte, VP AICS, presented 40 years of cultural activities and worldwide promotion of the Catalan culture spearheaded by AICS- the American Institute for Catalan Studies in Houston, Texas and Estel Llansana, President of the Catalan Casal in Toulouse, France presented the history, experiences and projects of the Casal in France.
La Fira Mediterrània de Manresa és un mercat d'espectacles que, amb la tradició mediterrània com a eix, es mou en dos àmbits principals: la cultura popular (basada en elements com la transmissió del patrimoni, el creuament entre creació contemporània i arrel tradicional, la participació i l’ampliació de la base social de la cultura) i les músiques del món i folk (músiques vinculades a l’arrel des d’òptiques tant tradicionals com contemporànies).
Se celebra anualment des de l'any 1998 i ha esdevingut un marc d'intercanvis entre professionals del sector que venen i compren espectacles.
La Fira Mediterrània té un caràcter interdisciplinari i aglutina els diferents llenguatges artístics: arts visuals, circ, dansa, exposicions, música, narració oral i teatre. Els espectacles programats són de diferents formats -petit, mig o gran-, de sala o de carrer, i adreçats tant al públic adult com al familiar.
La 21a edició se celebrarà a Manresa del 4 al 7 d’octubre de 2018.
Paral·lelament, la llotja professional és un punt privilegiat de contacte i compravenda tant del sector de les arts escèniques (circ, familiars, arts de carrer...) com de les músiques del món.
Els objectius de la fira són:
Potenciar la creació i la circulació nacional i internacional de projectes que uneixen la creació contemporània amb la cultura d'arrel.
Ser nucli de trobada, tendències i idees en l'àmbit de la cultura tradicional i potenciar els vincles amb el treball comunitari, la participació i l'ampliació de la base social de la cultura.
Consolidar-se com a mercat líder a l’Estat espanyol en músiques del món i folk.
Potenciar la capacitat d'exportació d'artistes i cultura catalana.
Ser porta d'entrada a l'Estat espanyol de projectes escènics i musicals internacionals.
Actuar com a punt de trobada de professionals a nivell internacional.
Fira Mediterrània de Manresa compta amb un Pla d’Acció Estatal i Internacional per ampliar horitzons amb nous camps d’acció i renovar els principals acords d’edicions anteriors. En aquest sentit, durant 2017 s'han dut a terme al voltant de 30 accions estratègiques a 15 països i regions d’Europa, Àfrica i Amèrica. El Pla es basa en accions d’intercanvi (artístic, professional i/o comunicatiu) i coproduccions i té com a principals objectius potenciar els fluxos de treball professionals i dotar de nous canals d’exhibició al teixit creatiu català.
Fira Mediterrània Manresa is a Performing Arts Fair rooted in Mediterranean tradition. It has two main areas of focus: popular culture (based on elements that include the transfer of heritage, the crossover between contemporary creation and traditional regional culture, participation in the social foundations of culture) and music (traditional and contemporary music representative of local regions, with a special emphasis on musics of the Mediterranean Origin).
It has been held every year since 1998 and has become a forum for professionals exchange.
Fira is an interdisciplinary event and the program covers all artistic languages – visual arts, circus, dance, exhibitions, music, storytelling and theatre.
The programmed shows are in different formats - small, medium or large-scale - in venues or in streets, aimed both adult and family audiences.
The 21st edition will be held from 4th to 7th October 2018.
In addition, the Business Area is an outstanding point of contact and sale both in the performing arts sector (circus, family shows, street performance, etc.) and in that of world music.
Fira aims to:
•Boost the implementation and dissemination of national and international projects wich fuse contemporary creativity with traditional and regional culture;
•Is the nerve centre of trends and ideas in the realm of traditional culture and promotes connections with community work and participation to increase people’s involvement in culture;
•Consolidate its reputation as a leading world music market in Spain;
•Promote the export Catalan artists and culture;
•Act as a gateway into Spain for howcases international theatre and music projects;
•Act as a connection hub for professionals on an international scale.
Fira Mediterrània Manresa has a national and international action plan to broaden horizons by opening up new areas of operations and renew the main partnership agreements from previous years. In 2017, a total number of 30 significant new ventures were planned for 15 countries and regions in Europe, Africa and the Americas. The Plan is based on initiatives for artistic, professional and communications-based exchanges and co-productions, and its main goals are to boost workflow and open up new mechanisms for exhibiting Catalan art and creativity.
Welcome to the Winter 2018 edition of CATALONIA, a quarterly publication
by AICS (American Institute of Catalan Studies) which is based in the large
metropolis, Houston, Texas. This is the 14th, newly revised edition, which is
currently distributed over multiple English speaking countries and throughout
the European continent.
David Murgadas esdevé un dels guitarristas catalans més prolífics dins el món guitarrístic català. De formació clàssica amb Guillem Bernabé a Rubí, a l’Escola d’Arts Musicals Luthier de Barcelona i amb el mestre José Tomás, deixeble d’Andres Segovia al Conservatori Superior de Música d’ Alacant, s’especialitza també en el repertori del Renaixement i Barroc i amb els intruments antics de corda polsada -viola de mà, llaüt, tiorba i guitarra barroca a l’Esmuc i al Conservatori de Toulouse. Es professor superior de guitarra clàssica i Màster en la praxis de la interpretació de la música antiga.
Des de l’any 2008 es professor i director artístic del SONA A GUITARRA: Curs d’orquestra de guitarres i Concurs Internacional per a joves guitarristes i professor al Conservatori Professional de Música d’Igualada des de l’any 1995
Reconegut a nivell internacional David Murgadas realitza concerts, cursos i conferències arreu. Es creador de diversos grups de cambra i ha realitzat diverses gravacions en Cd. Cal destacar el Cd CODEX amb obres de Santiago de Murzia on ha versionat les peces originals amb la incorporació d’instruments de la cultura catalana: sac de gemecs, viola de roda, flautí, flabiol i percussions.
Dona a conèixer el repertori per a guitarra dels segles XVII i XVIII, encara força desconegut, en format de concert i conferències.
Per aquest concert David Murgadas utilitza un instrument històric –la guitarra barroca- construit al 2007 pel luthier australià Peter Bifin.
David Murgadas is one of the most prolific Catalan guitarists of his time, with classical training under Professor Guillem Bernabe, in Rubí, in the Musical Arts Luthier School in Barcelona and with Professor José Tomás, a pupil of Andres Segovia at the Conservatory of Music of Alicante. He specializes in the Renaissance and Baroque period with the ancient instruments of pulsed-string vihuela, lute, theorbo and Baroque guitar at the Conservatory of Toulouse. He is a renown classical guitar teacher and a Master in the practice of the interpretation of baroque and classical music.
Since 2008, he is professor and artistic director of the SOUNDS LIKE a GUITAR course, an orchestral guitar course and international competition for young guitarists. He is also a professor at the Professional Conservatory of Music in Igualada, Catalonia since 1995.
International renown, David Murgadas, performs concerts, courses and conferences around the world. He is the creator of several chamber music ensembles and has made several Cd recordings, include the CODEX Cd with works of Santiago de Murzia, where he has orchestrated several version of the original works adding several instruments of the Catalan culture: bagpipes, viola, flute and percussion.
He performs the 17th and 18th century repertoire, still relatively unknown, in the form of concerts and lectures. For this concert David Murgadas utilizes a historical instrument, the Baroque guitar, built in 2007 by the Australian, Peter Bifin.

Despite the political situation in Catalonia during the Reapers War and Siege of Barcelona, the musical culture does not take a downfall, on the contrary, it thrives and the popular songs and dances of the time rekindled the damaged villages. The Spanish and Catalan guitar, known today as Baroque guitar, was the most popular instrument. Almost everyone had one and played many of the dances that were popular at that time. Since that time, the “guitarrística” culture has been unstoppable.
This program highlights a variety of the most important composers of the Crown of Aragon and the Crown of Castile, including: Gaspar Sanz, Francesc de Guerau, Santiago de Murzia and Antonio de Santa Cruz. Of the latter composer, David Murgadas has transcribed and performed many of the original manuscripts in concert.

I avui que soc jo qui rep un premi, vull retre homenatge a tots els Catalans que per mes d’una generació son fora de la nostra estimada terra.
SOM CATALANS I FEM HISTORIA,
I ara vull compartir la meva amb vosaltres amb l’esperança que tots els que hi són a l’exterior facin el mateix, per poder esdevenir la memòria que tot país mereix de no ser mai oblidat, pels que van marxar, els seus descendents, i els que vindran...
PERTANYO A UNA FAMÍLIA QUE DUU CATALUNYA A L’ADN…
Tinc la sort de provenir d una nissaga excepcional que ha treballat amb passió per esdevenir una Catalunya independent.
Les tres ultimes generacions de la meva família han dedicat somnis i esforços a servir a Catalunya en diferents àmbits.
El meu avi matern, el Dr. Francesc Ribas Soberano, fill d’una família modesta de Reus, al 1907 es trasllada a Barcelona per a estudiar Medicina.
A París s’especialitza en malalties pulmonars i viatja a Suècia per conèixer el seu sistema de Seguretat Social.
Amic d’en Lluís Companys, també va ser el seu metge personal.
Afiliat a Esquerra Republicana, es presenta a les eleccions al Parlament l’any 1932 sortint elegit Diputat.
No obstant la seva vida política, no abandona mai la seva activitat com a metge i el mateix any, funda i dirigeix el Sanatori Antituberculosi del Puig d’Olena, considerat ja en aquella època com un dels millors i mes avançats d’Europa.
El 1934, nomenat representant de la Generalitat de Catalunya a la Junta Administrativa de l’Hospital Clínic, va ocupar-se del finançament, així com de la normalització de l’ús del català en les reunions professionals i administratives.
El Sanatori va ser l’eina de la seva missió, un objectiu frustrat per la guerra i l’exili.
Va millorar les condicions sanitàries del seu país, organitzant un sistema d’assistència social de Qualitat i Equitatiu.
El meu avi era Progressista, Republicà i Independentista,
Però, per damunt de tot, ell es considerava un Humanista…
El meu avi patern, en Jaume Cardús Reig, treballador mercantil i sindicalista català, president de la Joventut Catalanista al 1916, fou militant del CADCI, associació política i social, fundada el 1903 a Barcelona.
Col·laborador de les publicacions “La Nació”, “El Diluvio” i “Lluita”.
Al 1920 forma un grup de tendència socialista dins del CADCI anomenat el Soviet, amb publicació pròpia.
L'agost del 1934 fou elegit president del CADCI i durant els fets del 6 d'octubre va donar suport a la proclamació de la República Catalana d’en Lluís Companys, raó per la qual fou empresonat.
El meu pare, el Dr. David Cardús Pascual, Cardiòleg i Matemàtic, va ser pioner en l'estudi dels efectes físics dels viatges espacials en els éssers humans, formant part al 1958 del primer programa espacial de la NASA, el Projecte Mercury.
Anys després, dirigiria un projecte de la NASA per desenvolupar una càmera de dormir giratòria que simulava la gravetat, la màquina centrifuga dissenyada per ell mateix.
Va rebre reconeixement de Catalunya mitjançant guardons com: la medalla Narcís Monturiol, el Doctorat Honoris Causa de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona i la Creu de Sant Jordi de la Generalitat, entre d’altres.
Científic i humanista va fundar diverses entitats culturals i científiques, destacant l’AICS, American Institute for Catalan Studies, i la NAFCA (North American Federation of Catalan Associations), per consolidar els Casals dels Estats Units i Canada.
La meva mare, la Francesca Ribas Rodríguez, guanyadora del Premi IPECC del 2004, amb la carrera de Química Farmacèutica, va ser una gran companya i col.laboradora, primer del meu Avi i desprès del meu Pare.
Durant 20 anys va dirigir el laboratori a on es realitzaven les proves pels estudis cardiovasculars.
A finals dels 70', amb el meu pare varen fundar l ‘AICS, el primer Casal d'Estats Units amb caràcter social i cultural.
Tothom la coneixia per la seva alegria, el seu gran sentit de l’humor, la seva senzillesa, generositat i, sobre tot, pel seu gran amor per Catalunya amb l’esperança de veure-la independent.
Jo vaig néixer a Barcelona durant els primers anys de la postguerra emigrant als 6 anys a Houston, tornant sovint a Catalunya els estius i gaudint de meravelloses estades amb els meus estimats avis, oncles, germans i cosins.
En viure a Mèxic durant 8 anys, vaig tenir l'oportunitat d'involucrar-me amb una comunitat catalana forta i dinàmica, que havia emigrat durant la Guerra Civil espanyola.
Al tornar a Houston al 1984 per fer un Màster en Relacions Internacionals i Sistemes d’Informació i treballant com a consultora pels principals centres de salut i empreses d'energia, vaig sentir la necessitat, donades les meves profundes arrels catalanes, d’estudiar de forma autodidacta la llengua i la cultura catalana.
El 1998 vaig oferir-me com a voluntària l’AICS com a directora del Comitè de Joventut.
Des de juliol de 2003, ja com a Presidenta de l'entitat i amb una junta Directiva molt forta i efectiva, hem desenvolupat nous programes i activitats amb especial cura per l’obtenció de finançament per als diversos projectes culturals, així com el disseny i administració de les nostres xarxes socials; culminant amb la publicació trimestral en angles i català de la nostra revista CATALONIA per donar a conèixer Catalunya en tots els àmbits.
Desitjo poder dur a terme la tasca d’honorar i promoure la meva estimada Catalunya amb el mateix amor i la devoció que els meus avantpassats, acompanyada dels meus principals i fidels col.laboradors; la Mayte Duarte, en Jordi Guillem, la Roslyn Smith, els membres de la Junta de la FIEC i tots els seguidors de la nostra lluita democràtica.
Dono les gracies el gran organitzador, Xavier Tudela, i a l’IPECC pel reconeixement de la Meva tasca, així com als que m’heu ensenyat i m’heu recolzat durant tot el camí.

I BELONG TO A FAMILY THAT CONTAINS CATALONIA IN OUR DNA ...
I am fortunate to come from an exceptional succession (line) of ancestors who have worked passionately towards Catalonia’s independence.
The three last generations of my family have dedicated dreams and efforts to serve Catalonia within different fields.
My maternal grandfather, Dr. Francesc Ribas Soberano, son of a modest family from Reus, in 1907 moved to Barcelona to study medicine.
In Paris, he specialized in lung diseases and traveled to Sweden to find out about their Social Security system.
Friend of Catalan President Lluís Companys, he was also his personal physician.
Affiliated to Esquerra Republicana, he presented himself as Senator in the Parliamentary elections of 1932 and successfully won the election.
Despite his political life, he never abandoned his career as a pulmonary physician and in 1932, he founded and directed the Puig d'Olena Antituberculosis Sanatorium, considered one of the best and most advanced in Europe.
In 1934, he was appointed Representative of the Generalitat de Catalunya to the Administrative Board of the Hospital Clínic where he manage the financing, as well as the normalization of the use of Catalan in both professional and administrative aspects.
The Sanatorium was the tool of its mission, a goal frustrated by war and exile…
He improved the health conditions of his country by creating and organizing a Social Security system characterized by quality and equality.
My grandfather was Progressive, Republican and Independently minded.
But, above all, he was considered a Humanitarian ...
My paternal grandfather, Jaume Cardús Reig, a Catalan businessman and trade unionist, President of the Catalanist Youth in 1916, was a member of CADCI, a political and social association founded in 1903 in Barcelona.
Contributor to the publications "La Nación", "El Diluvio" and "Lucha", in 1920 he formed a group with socialist tendencies within the CADCI called the “Soviet”, his own publication.
In August of 1934 he was elected President of CADCI and during the events of October 6, he supported the proclamation of the Catalan Republic of President Lluís Companys, reason for which he was imprisoned.
My father, Dr. David Cardús Pascual, Cardiologist and Mathematician, pioneered the study of the physical effects of space travel in humans in 1958, forming part of the Mercury Project, the first space program in NASA.
Years later, he would lead a NASA project to develop a rotating sleeping chamber simulating gravity, the centrifugal machine, designed by himself.
He received recognition from Catalonia through awards such as: the Narcís Monturiol medal, the Doctorate in Honoris Causa from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Sant Jordi Cross from the Generalitat, among others.
Both a scientist and a humanist, he founded several cultural and scientific entities, specifically, AICS, the American Institute for Catalan Studies, and NAFCA (North American Federation of Catalan Associations), to consolidate the cultural efforts of the Catalan Casal Organizations in the United States and Canada.
My mother, Francesca Ribas Rodriguez, winner of the 2004 IPECC award, obtained a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and was a great companion and collaborator, first to my grandfather and later to my father.
For 20 years she organized the laboratory where tests were conducted for the cardiovascular studies. At the end of the 70 's, she cofounded along with my father, AICS, the first Catalan organization in United States characterized by both social and cultural projects.
Everyone knew her for her joy, her great sense of humor, her generosity and, above all, for her great love for Catalonia with the hope of seeing her homeland become independent.
I was born in Barcelona during the first years of the postwar and emigrated, at age 6, to Houston, frequently returning to Catalonia in the summers and enjoying wonderful stays with my dear grandparents, uncles, sibblings and cousins.
When living in Mexico for 8 years, I had the opportunity to get involved with a strong and dynamic Catalan community, who had emigrated during the Spanish Civil War.
Upon returning to Houston in 1984, to complete an MBA in International Relations and Information Systems, while I worked as a consultant for the healthcare industry and energy sector, I felt the need, given my deep Catalan roots, to focus towards studying the Catalan language and culture.
In 1998, I volunteered for AICS as Director of the Youth Committee and since July 2003, as the President of the nonprofit organization, along with a very strong and effective board of directors, we developed new programs and activities with special attention to obtaining funding for various cultural projects, as well as the design and administration of our social networks; culminating with the quarterly publication in English and Catalan of our magazine CATALONIA which promotes all aspects of Catalan culture.
I want to be able to carry out the task of honoring and promoting my beloved Catalonia with the same love and devotion exhibited by my ancestors, accompanied by my main and faithful collaborators; Mayte Duarte, Jordi Guillem, Roslyn Smith, the members of the FIEC Board and all the followers of our democratic struggle.
